When we were recording this song (and even before that) I kept noticing how much *control* was necessary to play this song as it was intended. The rhythms and strange chords (and melody) were requiring extra focus, effort, time, and yes, control.
That is so fitting and also ironic as the song battles with the idea that we must gain control—over ourselves, our lives—and yet, perhaps the answer is in understanding that we can NOT control, and relinquishing that desire, that struggle, is where we find the freedom we're meant to have.
lyrics
Control (2000)
It all seems so clear, nothing can compare
To the love that never ends
It will not disappear
No, no, no, no, no, no
It was so sincere, the promise that I made
But now my biggest fear
Is that the things I say
Don’t match the things I show
chorus
Oh, they don’t match the things I show
No, no, no, no
I go, and do the things I know that don’t do me any good
When will I get control?
What is the draw here?
Why can’t I get away?
My heart just can’t get clear
Of all the dead man’s ways
That used to live in here
(chorus 2x)
bridge
Time is tickin’ away - I’m gettin’ older every day
Lord, I want to get control!
Well maybe it’s not about me
But your Spirit livin’ inside of me
He’s the one who can control - all the things I don’t
Spirit live in me - let everybody see
A life that’s not in my control... I give you the control!
Oh, this is all I need to know
Know, know, know, know
It will never, never do me any good to try to take control…
I give you the control!
