A Brand New Smile is one of my favorite songs to play. I enjoy the piano part, it's fun to sing, and it's passionate, powerful. Each time I sing it I can feel the angst of the battle to live in full disclosure. To know and live what you believe. (Even when you're not entirely sure what that is.)
I believe this is the life we are called to. We are not meant to know everything (how could we ever?) We are only meant to know one thing: we can trust our Father. I believe, Lord, help my unbelief.
This is one of my favorite tracks on the whole album. Enjoy!
lyrics
A Brand New Smile (1996)
Chasing after you, though my heart is broken in two
Crying out for something to see me through
I have found relief at the cross, at Jesus feet
There I’ve found my greatest inner peace.
But something’s different... there’s nothing here anymore
I have so many questions, but some say they’re digressions
I can’t understand this fear of expression
Lord I’m trying to learn, but where can I turn?
I want that fire again to burn
CHORUS
Oh I don’t know why, but Lord, I know it’s You
Oh, my heart cries, over and over and over and over again
Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief (2X)
When I was a child, it was so simple just to smile
And say that I believed just for a while
But as I’ve lived this life (I’ve) seen the lies with my own eyes
I can not understand, though I try
Oh, it all seems right, I need the faith like a child
With wide-open eyes, and a brand new smile
